The industrial sector in BiH is mainly characterized by conventional business, inefficient use of resources, outdated technology leading to high levels of emissions and enormous costs for energy and water. Therefore, it is necessary to invest efforts in the development of the food sector while conserving resources and introducing the model of circular economy and sustainable and socially responsible business.
The project seeks to promote the sustainable development of the food industry sector through the implementation of actions to improve resource efficiency. The main objective of the project is to strengthen capacity through a set of activities designed to respond to the local needs and to promote companies operating in accordance with EU standards and practices.
One of significant activities is the creation of the Strategy for Resource Efficiency in the BiH food industry with a program of measures to minimize waste streams generated by the use of energy, water and plastics. The implementation of measures achieves savings in resource consumption and reduces the negative impact on the environment.
Conducting training sessions for representatives of food companies will contribute to strengthening their knowledge about the possibilities of achieving resource efficiency and the benefits of circular economy. These training sessions will enhance the capacity of target groups regarding the importance of resource efficiency and environmentally sustainable production in the food sector.
In order to connect food companies with other stakeholders, relevant experts, institutions and organizations dealing with environmental conservation and resource efficiency, a Round table will be held on the topic of sustainable business and efficient use of resources.
For the strengthening public awareness of sustainable, “green” businesses, interesting examples from some of BiH and EU companies will be promoted, which have achieved savings in energy and water consumption, reduced the use of plastic packaging, established sustainable business and achieved economic growth.
Improvements in this sector will contribute to the more resource efficient and cleaner production of food industries, whereby the industries would achieve certain benefits and at the same time reduce the impact on the environment and local communities.
The project is officially launched on May 1st 2021, will last for 7 months and will be implemented by CENER 21. This project is a part of “Think Nature!” programme implemented by the Center for Civil Society Promotion (CPCD) and financially supported by Sweden.
